Purpose Puerariae Lobatae Radix (PLR), the root of Pueraria lobata, is used for treating diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.A closely related species, Puerariae Thomsonii Radix (PTR;the root of P.thomsonii), is often substituted for PLR in clinical practice.Conventional analytical methods such as high performance liquid chromatography are used to examine the quality of herbal samples, however, they involve tedious sample preparation, high solvent consumption and long run times.Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a rapid and non-invasive spectroscopic method for differentiating PLR and PTR.
