  Aquaporins play pivotal roles in plant growth,development and multiple stresses.Here we report a plasma membrane intrinsic protein(PIP)type aquaporin gene,LePIP2;3,from the medicinal plant Lithospermum erythrorhizon.LePIP2;3 encodes a predicted protein of 289 amino acids with the two typical conserved domains of PIPs,GGGANXXXXGY and TGI/TNPARSL/FGAAI/VI/VF/YN.The promoter of LePIP2;3contains phytohormone-responsive elements,such as ABA and GA,as well as the cis-acting elements for multiple stress resistances,such as drought and cold.
