The genetic mechanism of earthquakes still remains puzzling even though many genetic models of earthquakes have been proposed.More and more cryptoexplosive breccias(CBs)found widely in the world indicat that cryptoexplosion(explosion or detonation within the crust and upper mantle)is ubiquitous,which is not only related to the metallogeny of metals,but more importantly to the generation of earthquake.Here the dynamical relationship between earthquake generation and cryptoexplosion was discussed based on the data of CBs found at 174 sites in China,139 of which were dated in the Yanshanian period,28 inPreyanshanian and 7 in the Himalayan period.The CBs,related to the large faults in the orogenic zones,are characterized by angular fragments with grain sizes from less than millimeter to several meters,network and jigsaw textures.
