Jawless vertebrates represented by lampreys and hagfish use variable lymphocyte receptors (VLRs) as antigen receptors to mount adaptive immune responses.Lampreys have two populations of lymphocytes expressing distinct type of VLRs, named VLRA and VLRB, resembling T cells and B cells of jawed vertebrates, respectively.
