The electrocatalytic reduction of organic compounds at a low hydrogen overpotential metal catalyst cathode such as Raney nickel or palladium black is an alternative approach to conventional chemical catalytic hydrogenation schemes and direction electrochemical reduction routes at cathodes such as mercury or lead where hydrogen generation is suppressed.
