Water scarcity has become a major constraint for socio-economic development worldwide. The Falkenmark indicator is the first, and still remains a commonly used method for water scarcity assessment. The assessment approaches developed in the post-Falkenmark period have generally been based on water use to availability ratios. One major effort in water scarcity assessment over the years has been made on improving the spatial resolution of quantification of water availability and water use.
