ABAQUS/Explicit analysis module was used in this paper to simulate the dynamic buckling of elastic bar axially impacted by a rigid body.The non-dimensional impact load time-history curves are obtained. Due to the numerical results consistency with the analytical solution, it identifies that the numerical method used here is feasible. Based on the characteristic that the nondimensional impact load time-history curve is only related to the mass ratio,when themass ratio is constant, a new approach to determine whether the dynamic buckling occurs is proposed:that is, comparing the non-dimensional impact load time-history curve of the perfect elastic bar and that of bar with initial imperfection, if the latter curve bifurcates from the formerone at a certain moment, it indicates that the bar with initial disturbance buckles at the moment. This method can accurately capture the buckling moment and track the impact load curve of post-buckling, considering times of reflection of stress wave in the bar, which gives a practicalnumerical way to identify the dynamic buckling of elastic bar subjected to axial impact of rigid body.
