The solitary larval endoparasitoid, Cotesia vestalis (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), is one of the most important biological control agents of Plutella xylostella, the most destructive pest of cauliflower vegetables, and possesses all maternal immune-suppressive factors, such as venom, polydnavirus, ovarian proteins, and embryonic factors, including teratocytes.Parasitization by C.vestalis can slow down host development, and during this extended period the nutritional metabolism of host larvae is altered to ensure adequate nourishment for the development of the parasitoid progeny.
