Along with much of southern China, Hong Kong is subject to periods of heavy rainfall owing to its monsoonal climate, which can bring severe flooding problems in the wet summer season. Flooding has been exacerbated by rapid and extensive urbanisafion in low-lying areas. To tackle the flooding problem in Hong Kong, a series of major flood control projects have been actively implemented in Hong Kong, including the cross-boundary Shenzhen River Regulation Project. Flood prevention works have the potential to impact ecologically sensitive habitats (e. g., lowland rivers and freshwater wetlands) as well as species of conservation concern (e. g., globally threatened fish species), which has become a key factor in Hong Kong in determining the feasibility and shaping the implementation of proposed drainage works.
