The herb, American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) belong to Araliaceae family, is a one of the most valuable ginsengs which is native to Canada and USA.Its unique ginsenoside profile provides a cooling stimulating effect unlike Korean ginsengs (Panax ginseng) that is an invigorator having heating and stimulating properties[l].Besides the well-known saponin glycosides, active ingredients of ginseng, non-saponin ingredients such as essential oil take 1~2%[2].The volatile components in non-glucosidal proportion may affect to the top-note of Ginseng which would be the basic data for the studies such as aromatherapy, chemotaxanomy and inspection of adulteration of ginseng products.Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) coupled to time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF MS) was applied after sample preparation with static headspace method.
