Cells in multicellular organisms are distinct in composition, morphology and organization of intracellular organelles and even possess highly specialized organelles.Has the autophagic machinery evolved to accommodate the specific characteristics of each cell type? Are core autophagy genes differentially employed for autophagosome formation and maturation in different cell types and developmental contexts? Little emphasis has been placed on such potential cell type-specific differences.
