The development of the gonads can be divided into two phases:the indifferent genital ridge or bipotential gonad, and the definitive sex determination by formation of a testis or an ovary. In comparison to mammals, fish show a striking plasticity of the sex determination process, and a wide range of gonad differentiation mechanisms, characterized by hermaphroditism and gonoehorism.
