The colonization of lichens to the cultural heritage not only defile but also are attached to importance as one of the deterioration factors. The use of biomineralization of the epiphytic lichen as a method of substrate consolidation of a stone cultural heritage was investigated. The structure of the interface between lichens and the substrate rocks was analyzed. The analysis focused on the penetration depth of hyphae and the position of secondary metabolites and biominerals.Samples are fallen stones of rhyolites, granites, cherts, lavas and sandstones collected in Japan and Angkor, Cambodia. The process by which stone is made minute grain by the penetration of lichens was clarified. In the X-ray diffraction analysis of the epiphytic lichen surfaces, calcium oxalate monohydrate (Whewellite) and calcium oxalate dihydrate (Weddellite), that is the biominerals, were detected. The subject of investigation is the identification of the biomineral and the origin of the cation, and the extraction and examination of the element necessary for the consolidation.
