Objective To investigate the relationship between matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -2 activity and its mediator and prognosis in high-grade gliomas. Methods Twenty-six patients with high-grade gliomas were studied for the quantitative detection of gelatin zymography. The expression of MMP-2 and its mediator and the survival time of patients were analyzed statistically. Results The levels of MMP-2 in Grade Ⅲ and Grade Ⅳ gliomas were significantly different (P = 0.000). The level of MMP-2 was positively correlated with the grade (rs = 0.727, P = 0.000) (P = 0.002). The Cox regression analysis showed that the expression of MMP-2 in high-grade gliomas was significantly higher than that in patients without mediators (P = 0.002) -2 levels and the presence or absence of mediators were independent predictors of survival time (P = 0.003, P = 0.004). Conclusion The presence or absence of MMP-2 and its mediator in high-grade gliomas is an important factor affecting the survival time of patients.
