The nominal prices of agricultural products and their processed products on the international market have been on the decline since the 1980s after soaring in the 1970s. The increasing supply of supplies ahead of demand and the growing protection of the agricultural sector in industrialized countries are the most important causes of such changes. The general slowdown in inflation and changes in the exchange rate of currencies and the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar have also affected the development of prices. From the quarterly information on the nominal prices of all foodstuffs, including tropical drinks and oils and their processed products, the highest price since 1970 was four times the lowest price. There have been two price spikes throughout the development, the first being in 1974 and the second in 1980.
