Objective To investigate the relationship between serum IL-6 and IFN-γ levels and HBV and HCV overlap infection. Methods Serum levels of IL-6 and IFN-γ in patients with overlapping HBV and HCV infection were detected by double antibody sandwich ELISA. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total bilirubin (TBil) were also measured. Results The levels of serum IL-6 in patients with HBV and HCV infection were significantly higher than those in patients with HBV or HCV infection alone (P <0.01). Compared with the normal control group, IFN-γlevels in patients with acute hepatitis and HCV infection were only increased (P <0.01), IL-6 level was only increased in chronic patients (P <0.01), while patients with severe hepatitis and cirrhosis IL-6 and IFN-γ levels were significantly increased (P <0.01). The levels of IL-6 and IFN-γ in patients with HBV and HCV infection were positively correlated with the levels of ALT and TBil (P <0.01). Conclusions The incidence and outcome of overlapping infection of HBV and HCV are closely related to the abnormalities of IL-6 and IFN-γ secretion.
