U.S. Aerospace News reported on January 14 that only 16 commercial communications satellites were officially contracted in 2012, down from 17 in 2011 and remain at historically low levels. This number is significantly lower than many industry forecasts. Some officials said this is related to several orders that were originally expected to be signed by the end of the year to be launched by early 2013. The users of these orders have received the necessary financial support and the contract will be signed in recent months. The number of satellite subscriptions to measure the status of a given year’s industry was not that accurate.
