某些翻译理论文章甚至例句词典，因所引“例证”自身存在着缺陷，以致产生“悖论”现象。文中所析译例，在表意方面基本堪称达旨通顺，但从风格翻译层面上看，它们却都不尽人意。这说明，译事之难，译者当以自儆；而欲将那些包含有缺陷瑕疵的译例视作佳句撷英，进而作为某种理论的“例证”或是双语比照研究的典范，那就不由得人们不对它们进行质疑、推敲、再推敲乃至“苛求”了。文中强调翻译以“信”为本，不但“义旨”要信，“风格”更要信。
