从文学流派的角度审视,旧说多认为包天笑为“鸳鸯蝴蝶派”作家。本文在搜集较多资料的基础上,首先界定“鸳鸯蝴蝶派”的基本概念,再从作家的译绎和写作实践、创作道路历程,结合作家的《回忆录》、自白及已有的不同看法,从特定历史时期的文学流派的总体倾向,做具体的分析研究,认为说包天笑是近现代“旧小说的押阵老将”、“白话通俗小说家”是合适的,而把他列为“鸳鸯蝴蝶派”作家,则不尽符合事实,未必妥当。
