Pingyangmycin (PYM) is a complex of glycopeptide-type antitumor antibiotics produced by Streptomyces verticillus var pingyangensisn n. var.. In recent years, it has been proved to be a new effective chemical mutagen. To make the availability of combined effect of PY(?)combina we studied mutagenic effects of PYM, γ-rays and their combined treatments on rice. Laid out in a randomized block design with three replications, the experiment was conducted during Apr to Jul in 1993 and 1994 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Selected seeds of indiea rice variety Luqingzao were irradiated with 0, 150, and 300 Gy of ~(137)Cs γ-rays before per-soaking for 20h in distilled water at 30±2℃.The pro-soaked seeds were then treated with 0, 10, and 20μg/ml of PYM for 8 h at the same temperature. Having been washed in tap water for 3h, the treated seeds were germinated in the laboratory, a small part of which were used for cytological observation and measurement of seedling height and root
