玉米是我国的主要粮食作物之一,也是重要的工业原料和良好的饲料。玉米单产高,增产潜力大,可以春播、夏播,适宜间作套种,玉米秸秆可以还田或沤肥,因此积极发展玉米生产,对于大幅度地增产粮食,夺取农业丰收,有着重要意义。无产阶级文化大革命以来,深入开展“农业学大寨”群众运动,生产条件不断改进,群众性科学实验活动的蓬勃开展,促进了玉米生产水平的不断提高。各地综合运用农业“八字宪法”,实行科学种田,涌现出一批高产典型。辽宁省1975年1,891万亩玉米,平均亩产达到512斤;山东省烟台地区1975年430万亩春夏玉米,亩产达到618斤;辽宁省海城县1975年36万亩春玉米,平均亩产825斤;山东省栖霞县1975年28.5万亩夏玉米,平均亩产753斤。各地还出现了一批亩产千斤以上的社队和1,500斤左右的高产地块。如河南省沁阳县杨庄大队1975年115亩夏玉米平均亩产1,230斤;滑县秦刘拐大队1,974亩夏玉米亩产1,027斤,其中120亩亩产1,260斤;山东省黄县下丁家大队1975年1,200亩夏玉米亩产950斤。山西省平顺县西沟大队1971年500亩春玉米,平均亩产1,427斤;广西凤山县城厢公社长垌大队1974年44亩春玉米亩产1,489.7斤;等等。这些高产典型,为夺取玉米高产提供了丰富的经验。现分别介绍夏玉米和春玉米的高产栽培技术。
