The Alabama River is named after the Indian tribes. When the early European explorers first arrived in Central Alabama, the Indian tribes settled there. The name of the state is from the river. The name Alabama first appeared in DeSoto’s 1540 expedition record, spelled as Alibam, Limamu, and Alibamo.
