Martin Marietta has started making a multi-frequency sub-lead seeker (MSS) prototype that it hopes will see a breakthrough in the sale of air-to-air missiles. The company’s biggest hope is to use the internal investment system to replace the American AIM-9X Rattlesnake bomb. Although the company took a cooperative decision to try to begin air-to-air missiles several years ago, the company’s investment has been changing with the fate of the AIM-9X. The AIM-9X program is now under cost-effectiveness analysis under the leadership of the National Assembly. Based on its analysis, applications will be submitted in the third quarter of 1993 and more than one contractor is currently being selected for demonstration and verification in 1994. Martin Marietta said the AIM-9X imaging seeker is a positive one, but the key to success is to reduce the high cost of missiles. For this reason, the projectile will employ a platinum-silicide focal plane array instead of cadmium mercury telluride. It also uses an integrated gimbal design instead of the expensive design used by the AIM-9R. Martin Marietta has consulted with Hughes and Raytheon to develop a demonstration verification program.
