Researchers at Stanford University in the US developed an on-chip optical isolator using CMOS-compatible materials and processes that are expected to dramatically reduce the cost of future optical chips. Optical isolators only allow light to propagate unidirectionally, which is crucial in optical fiber communication networks. It prevents interference between different components and overcomes the resulting complex parasitic response. When the optical network is integrated on the chip, the appropriate isolation mechanism will be more important.
