The University of California Davis Vegetable Crops is one of the very few research institutes in the world that focuses on celery breeding and genetics. Its Celery is the leading celery producer in the celery industry in California, which occupies a significant portion of the world. The main goal of the Davis research program is to develop resistance and insect resistance, including lines that are resistant to blight, late blight, and leaf lint. In order to address the current and future needs of the celery industry in California, an effective celery breeding program should be developed whose priority is to solicit large amounts of germplasm and conduct genetic basic research on celery. So far, 300 parsley germplasm collections have been collected, including commercial varieties and all land cultivars, as well as several wild species. Although there are at least 15 species in this genus, almost all of the genebanks in the world have not yet been described.
