It is dangerous to over-interpret the Pritzker Prize for the highest award in the construction industry for a particular year. But as journalists have often joked: Two facts and a deadline create a trend. So here’s what this year’s prize goes to the tendency of Alejandro Aravina, a Santiago-based Chilean, to say that the architectural world is at least changing its way of thinking. It is moving away from the flashy landmark buildings that consumed too much oxygen before the recession, moving to a more people-centered design that seeks to address the immediate needs of housing shortages, climate change and more by design.
