Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the major causative agent of viral bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and children. It is an enveloped RNA virus that mainly invades airway epithelial cells. The envelope glycoprotein of the virus mediates the fusion of the envelope and the host cell membrane, and the infected cells also fuse together to form the syncytia.
