Objective To investigate the changes of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in senile deaf patients and its clinical significance. Methods Thirty patients with senile deafness underwent brainstem auditory evoked potentials (ABR). The incidence, latency and wave interval of each wave in ABR were observed and compared with healthy controls. Results In addition to the Ⅴ wave, ABR of senile deaf group were significantly different (P <0.01). The latencies of Ⅰ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ waves in the senile deaf group were significantly longer than those in the control group (P <0.05), and the mean values of wave Ⅴ latency were significantly different (P < P <0.01). Compared with the control group, the latency of Ⅰ ~ Ⅲ and Ⅰ ~ Ⅴ waves in the senile deaf group were significantly prolonged, with significant difference (P <0.01). Conclusion Senile deaf patients not only have impaired cochlear function, but also have lesions in the brainstem conduction pathway.
