Linguistic knowledge of register and genre have been presented in the paper.The key point is how genre-based conceptions of language can be applied in college English teaching.The aim of the paper is to make teachers develop a consciousness of genre and register,which enables them to identify and focus on whatever aspect of language in use the learner needs most help with.
