Wen Liu is one of the founders of Basai DEEYA clothing Co., Ltd., and she masters and plans in detail from design philosophy and design to development routes. She combines ethnic elements with men’s wear, and matches with original environmental and comfortable fabrics. She only used several fashion shows to bring new trend for men’s wear design.

Recently, the reporter specially interviewed Wen Liu to share her design idea.

Reporter: Director Liu, since the foundation of Basai DEEYA in 2011, Basai DEEYA has taken a place in fashion world in short time, which is inseparable with the several wonderful fashion shows, and I still remember people’s shaking feeling brought by the fashion show in Seoul, Korea. Where do your aspirations of this fashion show come from?

Wen Liu: The theme of this fashion show is“Dragon Design”, and design is carried out as per the special symbol of “Dragon”. Men’s tremendous momentum and generous mind are shown through the image of Chinese traditional dragon.

Reporter: As we all know that “Dragon” is a mythical animal, so how the concrete image is embodied in your works?

Wen Liu: The image of dragon exists for thousands of years in China. Although it is a mythical animal without true images, it is always the symbol of position and spirit. Therefore, we choose this theme this time, and we also do not use “Dragon Design” pattern, but hide the element of “Dragon” in the fabrics through decomposition & recombination and threedimensional cutting, and build out spirit through the matching of color and accessories, meanwhile, male hormone flavor of the models is incisively and vividly shown according to the three-dimensional cutting of skeleton lines under the contrast of fashion.

Reporter: Embroidery is the important element among your numerous designs, but it is believed that it not a simple subject for recreating new vitality from the old embroidery art. How do you achieve it?

Wen Liu: Our embroidery comes from different design inspirations, and it is particular about how to choose different patterns and needles as per different fabrics and styles. This is our tradition, which expresses quite classic and elegant feelings. For the application on men’s wear, the corresponding patterns and needles can also express a sense of erudition. My habit is to confirm the feeling and sense that I want to express in the clothes at the beginning of design, and then choose matching elements, making embroidery art blended in modern fashionable clothes, finding its position and deducing new vitality.
Reporter: In your design, there are many applications of embroideries and printings, which makes people fell sense of art. Actually, many designers may be puzzled when facing how to balance the relationship between art and design, but you seem not to focus on this?

Wen Liu: Yes, it is a contradiction that exists between design work and market demand for a long time. However, I don’t think we have to cater the market negatively, but to create a desire for the market, and bring something new through this method. If these new things can bring different feelings for people, such as embroidery and printing elements blended by us, if a person likes them, he will be sure to buy them, which makes the market demand. I think for the industry of fashionable clothes, market demand depends on uniqueness of a design.

Reporter: All the finished works of this new conference have used the new type sunscreen fabric and flax coconut combined fabric which are latest developed by you, so you totally do not need to worry about acceptability of the market, right?

Wen Liu: Totally not. We have considered care- fully about comfort level and texture of these two fabrics before application, believing that they are suitable for the theme of this time. Moreover, the two fabrics initiated by us this time belong to original environmental friendly fabrics, which will be a trend for texture selection of future fashionable clothes.

Reporter: It is the first time to hold personal news conference, so is there any special circumstances during the process preparation?

Wen Liu: To tell you the truth, at first the language became a problem, many trivial things needed to be handled, and I had the habit of doing everything by myself, therefore, it was troublesome to arrange the conference site. However, after I calmed down, I began to solve problems one by one, and finished them soon, therefore, it didn’t make many problems. In my opinion, a designer shall not only have own works, but also have to understand how to let own design display best effect, and express own design concept, therefore, I have decided by myself for the lighting and music at site.

Reporter: After a few news conferences, although there are displays for women’s wear, most of your design is for men’s wear. There are few female designers that design men’s wear, so why do you choose men’s wear design?

Wen Liu: When talking about fashionable clothes, most people will think about various kinds of images for women’s wear, with lovely, sexy, noble and nifty modeling images. However, men also play an important role in the society, while there are much fewer types of men’s wear compared with that of women. Therefore, I think there is a big space to play for men’s wear, and there are fewer changes in the shape, while the details will be more complicated. So I want to challenge myself within the limited range, and make it more characteristic, expressing spirit and charm of men.

Reporter: What are your future plans? You will still focus on design of men’s wear, or start to design some beautiful wears for women?

Wen Liu: Still men’s wear. So far, I still enjoy the current state. The combination of oriental art and fashionable clothes will impact for new sparks, and new breakthrough of each time makes me happy. However, if I have some new ideas on design of women’s wear, I may also start to do design for women’s wear.
