UNFAO warned on July 31st that, the move to provide continous emergency livelihood toolboxes to farmers, fishermen and herdsmen in South Sudan is suffering from such serious threats due to the capital shortage that the famine risk in some areas of the country is deteriorating.
In order to help South Sudan, FAO called on a donation of US$108 million and has collected US$42 million till now. The funds supported over 205,000 disadvantaged families, which was equal to over 1.2 million people.
FAO provided emergency livelihood toolboxes to the families, which contain seeds of crops and vegetables, fishing equipment, livestock treatment kit and vaccine and other things related to vet. FAO said that, as many as 95% of the population depends on agriculture, fishery and animal husbandry to meet the need for food and income. The distribution of toolboxes offers ways for fishing, crops growing and feeding healthy livestock, and this, in turn, ensures milk, vegetables, meat and fish being served on the table so that many people’s life can be sustained.
The speed of providing emergency livelihood support by FAO to South Sudan is 10 times than that of the last year. It has delivered, paid and promised to pay all the collected money and now the resource is used up. FAO urgently needs the US$66 million additional money to enhance the support and help the country go through crisis by self-salvation.
