In Australia, heritage registrations and legal lists are an important means of managing cultural heritage. Legal registration of cultural heritage provides the basis for legal protection, guides the permitted changes and effectively supports decision-making. Imagine what an insignificant impact would be on an incomplete or even wrong list. The Australian heritage list is divided into three levels: country, state and local. The list of countries and states needs to be adequately researched and evaluated, subject to expert review and approval by the Minister. Australia’s tertiary heritage system allows the same estate to be placed in multiple directories, including non-statutory lists of professional groups.
