美国加利福尼亚工学院地震实验室的三位研究人员,根据我国和美国的有关资料对我国1976年唐山地震的发震机制进行了研究.原文载美国地震学会通报1979年2月号.兹扼要介绍其研究的结论.作者根据美国地质调查所的记录数据,将我国唐山地震的主震震级定为Ms=7.7,主震发生后15小时的主余震震级为Ms=7.2.认为这是世界历史记载上仅次于1556年陕西地震造成灾难最大的地震.(译者注:就生命的损失而言,这个估计已由以后发表的核实数字所否定.)
Three researchers from the Earthquake Laboratory of California Institute of Technology conducted a study on the seismogenic mechanism of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in our country based on the relevant data of China and the United States. The original report contains the February 29 issue of the American Seismological Society According to the records of the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the mainshock of Tangshan earthquake in our country is set as Ms = 7.7, and the magnitude of the main aftershock 15 hours after the main shock is Ms = 7.2, which is regarded as the historical record in the world Second only to the most catastrophic earthquake in Shaanxi in 1556.
