技高一筹定乾坤实现56K 的前提是公用电话网(PSTN)的总局交换机之间的连线为数字线路,而局端交换机与用户之间线路仍为模拟话音线,客户端和服务器端必须均具备支持56K 的设备,若服务端不支持56K,则56K 调制解调器将以可用的最高普通调制标准(一般是 V.34)进行连接。3Com 公司的远程接入服务器、Modem 等各种产品只需进行简单的软件下载就可实现 x2以及即将颁布的 ITU-T V.90(56K 国际标准),从而保护用户投资。目前正在使用的许多3Com/USR Modem 都可以通过软件升级到56K,大部分33.6Kbps Modem 已从去年2月起陆续升级到56Kbps。增加56K 服务能力并不需要改变 ISP 基本设施,已安装了3Com 远程接入设备的 ISP 只需简单地下载软件,便能拥有56K 服务能力。
