北宋“翰林图画院”是皇家御用画院,这种“御用”的特性,决定了它的绘画有着自身的创作特性,这在题材上,表现为“院画题材的确定性”和“合乎赵宋统治阶级政教需要的特性”。在画风上,则表现为“院画创作讲究对传统画风的继承和对画院本身所确立的‘体制’画风的师承”以及“院画的创作要合乎皇室宫廷的审美趣味”。上述创作特性在一定程度上限制或泯灭了院画家的创作个性。但是,我们也不能不加分析地一概否定,尤其是在北宋徽宗朝,院画家“竭尽精力,以副上意”,就等于是在探索和完善着新的院画“体制”──“宣和体”画风。
