英语中有不少和“走”相关的词, 说明各种各样走路姿态之间的不同之处。这些词如下: stagger, plod, pace, loiter, stride, stray, strut, ramble, lurk, creep, stroll, stumble, trudge, scramble, lurch, limp, prowl, crawl, march, rush。下面一一举例说明。
1. stagger n. / v. 摇晃,蹒跚
A drunk man was staggering across the street. 一个醉汉正摇摇晃晃地穿过马路。
She gave a stagger as she began to feel faint. 她感到头晕时身体摇晃了一下。
The drunkard staggered from the restaurant and clung to a lamp-post. 那醉汉蹒跚着从酒店里出来, (然后)抱着一根电线杆。
2. plod v. 沉重缓慢地走
The old man plods along, hardly able to lift each foot. 那老人步履艰难地走着,双脚几乎都提不起来。
The hitch-hikers reached the town after a long walk and plodded wearily to the hotel. 那(免费搭车的)旅行者走了很长一段路到达城里, 然后慢慢地朝旅馆走去。
3. pace v. 踱步,慢行
The lion paced the floor of the cage. 狮子在笼子里踱来踱去。
The man whose wife was expecting the first baby was pacing nervously up and down the hospital corridor. 那位妻子即将生育第一个婴儿的男人在医院的走廊上紧张地踱来踱去。
4. loiter v. 闲逛,游荡
The policeman watched the two men, who were loitering near the bank. 警察监视着那两个在银行附近逛来逛去的人。
After class, the children did not go home directly but loitered on the way. 放学后, 孩子们没有径直回家, 而是在路上游荡着。
5. stride v.(strode;stridden)大踏步走,阔步
The manager strode into the office and asked who was late for work. 经理大步走进办公室并问是谁上班迟到了。
He strode over the stream. 他大步跨过溪流。
6. stray v. 走离,走失,迷途
Her thoughts strayed from the subject. (喻)她的思想偏离了主题。
The puppy strayed from its home and was completely lost. 小狗从家里走失并完全丢失了。
7. strut v. 大摇大摆地走,昂首阔步
The cock is strutting up and down the farmyard. 公鸡在院子里随意地走来走去。
8. ramble v. 漫步
After supper, I often go rambling in the park. 晚饭后, 我经常到公园里去漫步。
9. lurk v. 潜行,潜伏
The thief has been lurking in a corner. 小偷一直潜行在角落里。
10. creep v.(crept;crept)爬行,匍匐而行
The cat crept silently towards the mouse. 猫悄悄地向老鼠靠近。
Not wishing to be noticed, the boy crept downstairs. 为了不被人注意, 那男孩爬着下了楼梯。
11. stroll v. 溜达;闲逛;漫步;散步
On weekends, Tom and his friends go strolling in the town. 每逢周末, 汤姆和他的朋友经常到镇上去溜达。
12. stumble v. 绊脚,绊跌
In a hurry, the maid stumbled and fell to the floor. (由于)匆匆忙忙, 那女仆绊了脚并摔倒在地板上。
13. trudge v. 艰难地走,跋涉
The farmer trudged home with his hoe. 那农夫背着锄头艰难地走回了家。
14. scramble v. 攀爬,攀登
I scrambled up the rock. 我爬上了那块岩石。
The mountaineers scrambled up the moutain. 登山运动员爬到了山顶。
15. lurch v. 摇摆不定
The car lurched forward across the grass. 小车摇摆不定地穿过了草地。
16. limp v. / n. 跛行,一瘸一拐地走
With one leg hurt, John limped home. 由于一条腿受伤, 约翰一瘸一拐地走回了家。
He walks with a limp. 他走路一瘸一拐。
17. prowl v.(觅食的野兽或贼等)四处潜行,偷偷地徘徊
Beasts often come out to prowl after their prey at night. (四足)野兽经常在晚上出来四处觅食。
I woke in the middle of the night and heard someone prowling about in the garden. 我半夜醒来听见花园里有人偷偷地走动。
18. crawl v. 爬行
The baby crawled across the room. 婴儿从房间这一头爬到那一头。
Look out! There’s an insect crawling up your back. 当心!有一只小虫在你背上爬动。
19. march v. 行进,进军
The victorious army marched into the conquered city. 得胜的军队迈进了被征服的城市。
The soldiers marched along the road. 战士们沿着马路行进。
20. rush v.(使)赶紧,(使)匆忙,(使)快速行动
The pedestrians rushed in the rain. 行人在雨中快步行走。
There’s plenty of time. We needn’t rush. 时间充裕得很, 我们用不着赶。
