涵江地处海峡西岸兴化海畔,依山临海,有1500年的历史,曾为“福建四大名镇”之一。二十年前,沐浴着改革开放的春风,伴随着莆田市的开发建设,涵江区应运而生,原辖一个街道一个乡,后调整为两个街道三个镇;1992年,涵江区被省政府批准为改革开放综合试验区。2002年5月,莆田市部分行政区划进行调整,涵江发展的历史从此翻开了新的一页,现辖九镇一乡两个街道及赤港华侨经济开发区,辖区面积752平方公里,人口42万,海外“三胞”35万人,是福建省重点侨乡之一。
