唐人韩愈曾写过一篇《送高闲上人序》。高闲是禅僧,又是当时有名的草书家。韩愈一生反佛,却为何又要给高闲写序?值得思量。由张旭而及高闲,有一伏笔。他以独特的视觉,强调张旭书法的抒情功能,由此而怀疑高闲的草书只有空洞的形式,而无喜怒哀乐的真实的精神内容。因为佛教讲出世,『其为心必泊然』、『其于世必淡然』,所以『闲如通其术,则吾不能知之矣。』用意是十分明白的。
