唐太宗于贞观初年,命高士廉等修《氏族志》。到贞观十二年修成,颁行天下。二十一年后,唐高宗于显庆四年命孔志约等,改修为《姓氏录》。唐高宗亲自作序,颁行天下,并收回贞观《氏族志》悉烧之。关于唐朝前期的这两次修志,正史记载是肯定贞观《氏族志》,否定显庆《姓氏录》。认为贞观《氏族志》是唐太宗修定,并诏颁天下州藏副本。而显庆《姓氏录》则是由许敬宗提出,认为贞观《氏族志》不叙武氏本望而重修的。修成后,
