Citrus production has risen from 50,000 tons in the mid-1970s to 370,000 tons in 1985; and the area under cultivation has risen from 9,000 hectares to over 15,000 hectares. South Korea’s citrus production mainly comes from the broad-leaved citrus grown on Jeju Island across the sea from the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula.
