German researchers recently reported that they found that skin sample analysis or contribute to the early diagnosis and research of Parkinson’s disease. Alpha-synuclein is a protein found in the human brain that is found mostly in the presynaptic terminals distal to neurons (nerve cells). The presynaptic terminals release chemicals, collectively known as neurotransmitters, which are responsible for signaling between neurons and play a key role in maintaining normal brain function. Previous studies have found that the aggregation of α-synuclein into blocks can result in the death of neurons that release the neurotransmitter “dopamine,” while the reduction in dopamine triggers Parkinson’s disease.
