The new metal silicon plant in Australia (Baraco Silicon Company) started producing metal silicon in mid-December 1989. The first phase of the plant has an annual production capacity of 27,000 tons and an investment of 120 million U.S. dollars. The second phase of the project will be put into operation in late 1991, the production capacity of 66,000 tons. The third phase of the project plans to increase the annual production capacity of silicon metal to 100,000 tons. The plant sells 50% of its annual production to DuPont, a company that supplies metal-silicon manufacturing technology; 30% to Thyssen, the Federal Republic of Germany, and each have long-term supply contracts. The remaining 20% to Japan
