现代水稻育种研究从其理论和技术上已达到很高水平,然而水稻育种成效却不那么显著,扩大和丰富水稻基因库颇有希望的途径是通过远缘杂交将异源植物的优良基因转移到水稻中来,打破不良性状连锁,实现优良性状相结合。1972年通化市农业科学院开始从事菰稻远缘杂交研究,获得一批变异非常丰富菰稻资源,并出现在常规育种中较难得到的几种优良性状之间的连锁遗传现象,如矮秆与多穗、多穗与大穗、大穗与高结实率、大粒和高饱满度、矮秆与多穗和大穗之间、大穗与大粒之间、大穗与大粒及高结实率和高饱满度等性状之间连锁。利用这些材料通化市农业科学院先后选育并审定通过20多个水稻品种,其中通育217就是其中2009年最新审定品种。
