The Tan-Lu fault zone underwent intense stretching activities from the Late Cretaceous to the Early Tertiary and generally controlled the development of faulted basins. The extensional activities in the middle and southern sections of the fault zone started in the early Late Cretaceous, whereas the northern section started in the early Tertiary period with a clear northward migration pattern. The extension of the fault zone showed a pulsating and gradual development. It has been found that six extension events took place in the fault zone from the Late Cretaceous to the Early Tertiary, with corresponding depositional responses in the controlled basins. The impact and scale of the extension activities of the fault zone gradually widen from morning till night. The migration phenomenon and the pulsatile development of these stretching activities are related to the Pacific plate activities in the same period.
