在大洋水深超过5000m处于CCD以下时,洋底广布硅质较泥和深海粘土而缺少钙质软泥.本次研究所用大洋DY85-4航次勘探采集的1787站沉积岩心样品即是如此,故在稳定同位素研究上,不得不放弃较为成熟的用钙质生物壳体进行的碳、氧同位素研究而开展应用硅质生物壳体的氧、硅同位素研究.
