In the context of the planned near - natural restructuring of the river Isar in the southern part of Munich the results which were obtained from the 2d hydrodynamic model had to be validated by a physical model. In addition to the hydraulics the investigations of the physical model are including the shape and stability of the redesigned gently sloping banks, the formation and dynamics of aggradation zones, the stability of islands as well as the structure of the ramps. This paper is mainly focused on a special kind of bank Protection which is hidden in the flood plains. Thus the safety of the dams is guaranteed as well as an area for natural morphological dynamic processes is available. The model also proved to be a very useful public relations tool for this spectacular project.
