On January 4, 2015, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection issued a public notice on its website, announcing that Yang Weize, Party Chief of Nanjing Municipal CPC Committee and member of the Standing Committee of Jiangsu Provincial CPC Committee, was under internal investigation for suspected violation against law and discipline. Yang is the highest-ranked CPC official that gets investigated since the 18th Party Congress.
The announcement came out abruptly yet not totally unexpected. Talks about Yang Weize’s fall have been circulating in Nanjing for more than half a year. It is rumored that he is involved in serious economic corruptions, considering he use to serve as Party Chief of Wuxi City, home town of Zhou Yongkang, the biggest “tiger” cracked down during China’s anti-corruption campaign.
Yang Weize, 52, use to be regarded as a promising politician of Jiangsu Province. Public documents show that he was born in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province in September, 1962. Among all the sub-provincial officials of Jiangsu, Yang Weize had age to his advantage.
In 1978, 16-year-old Yang Weize was enrolled in Nanjing Aviation Engineering College (now known as the Department of Transportation of Southeast University). After graduating from college in July, 1981, he entered the transportation system of Jiangsu administration and has been moving upward hierarchically since then.
