In recent years, Hong Kong and Taiwan’s investments in mainland China have drawn great attention from scholars, while investments from Singapore have received much less attention. Although Singapore invested less in China than Hong Kong or Taiwan, it increased rapidly in the 1990s with Beijing’s encouragement. China has also been expanding its economic activities in Singapore. Singapore has three characteristics that make it an economic concern with China. First, residents in Singapore are predominantly Chinese. In mid-1993, Singapore had a population of about 2.8738 million, of whom 77.5% were Chinese. Although Lee Kuan Yew and the People’s Action Party of Singapore have been striving to establish the national identity of Singapore and insist that Singaporeans are Singaporeans rather than overseas Chinese, Singapore’s Chinese identity is still undeniable. Second, Singapore is an independent country recognized by the international community.
