XRD data show that in reaction stream perovskite compound SrCeO_3cecomposes into SrCO_3 and CeO_2 phases completely, in which Ce and Sr cationspenetrate respectively. The insertion of Sr cations into CeO_2 phase suppresses itscombustion power and promotes C_2 selectivity substantially. The kinetics of titlereaction over CeO_2, SrCeO_3 and SrCe_(0.88) Yb_(0.12) O__(2.94) has been measured. It im-plies that the rate-determining step is the dehydrogeration of methane moleculeto form methyl radical on CeO_2 phase.
