In the history of American literature, James Thurber is considered the best master of humor after Mark Twain. The short story “The Secret Life of Walt Meadie” epitomizes James Thurber’s humorous view. Walter Mitty represents the trivial, underestimated little man in society, and the incompetent loser in his life who find comfort only in the midst of a dream. This kind of humor reveals the ubiquity and ridiculous phenomena in real life and helps people understand the problems of the times. This article attempts to analyze “the secretive life of Walter Mitty” from the perspectives of humor, situational humor and portrayal of characters.
